Moremi Game Reserve closed 5 – 26 March due to flooding

Botswana’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism has closed Moremi Game Reserve from 5 – 26 March after heavy rains caused extensive flooding, leaving many internal routes impassable. Authorities said the temporary shutdown is to protect visitors and staff, with several access roads and wildlife‑viewing tracks submerged or washed out.

Travellers heading to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve have also been warned of possible flooding in the park’s northern areas as the rainy season intensifies. Moremi, on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, is a flagship conservation area central to Botswana’s high‑value, low‑impact tourism model, and the closure is expected to disrupt access to lodges, campsites and wildlife corridors, affecting safari operators and self‑drive visitors.
