Mauritania guarantees 700m loan to revive national carrier
Mauritania’s government has approved a state‑backed guarantee for a bank loan of up to 700 million ouguiyas – about $18m – to support Mauritania Airlines, easing operational constraints and funding fleet maintenance and upgrades. The carrier is currently operating with only two active aircraft, with several others grounded for extensive maintenance.
The financing is aimed at improving reliability and ensuring continuity of essential air services, addressing challenges linked to the airline’s small scale and heterogeneous fleet. Officials said the move aligns with broader financial sector reforms and comes with expectations of stronger management and technical standards. Enhanced capacity is expected to lift domestic and regional connectivity in West Africa, supporting tourism and trade.
