Maputo National Park Generates $360,000 in Tourism Revenue Amid Regional Challenges
Maputo National Park in southern Mozambique generated 23 million meticais (approx. USD 360,000) in tourism revenue over the past year, according to a new report by the Peace Parks Foundation (PPF). While the park saw a modest 4% growth in overland visitors, the results were impacted by political unrest in late 2024. Key tourism activities in the park showed mixed trends: diving decreased by 7%, ocean safaris dropped by 10%, while dolphin encounters rose by 2%. Recreational fishing grew by 5%, generating USD 28,000 – an increase of 60% in revenue.
Tourism across other national parks in Mozambique also showed progress. Limpopo National Park recorded a 34% increase in visitors and an 18% rise in revenue, aided by infrastructure improvements including new road signage. Zinave National Park welcomed 1,200 visitors – a 65% increase – and added new camping facilities to meet demand. The PPF contributed over USD 9.2 million in direct financial support to park operations in 2024, managing an additional USD 6.3 million from external donors. Anti-poaching efforts also improved, with increased ranger patrols, reduced snaring incidents, and stronger wildlife protection across key conservation areas.
