Maldives and Ethiopia Sign Air Services Agreement to Launch Direct Flights
The Maldives and Ethiopia have signed an air services agreement paving the way for scheduled flights between the two countries, with the deal signed at the Maldives Ministry of Transport by Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen and Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority Director General Yohannes Abera. The agreement makes Ethiopia the sixth African country to establish an air services framework with the Maldives, following Egypt, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles and South Africa.
The agreement is expected to enable Ethiopian Airlines - Africa's largest carrier and the continent's most extensive route network operator - to launch direct flights from Addis Ababa to the Maldives, while also opening the route to Maldivian, the national carrier. Minister Ameen noted that the deal aligns with the government's broader objective of expanding direct air connectivity between the Maldives and major international aviation hubs, and is expected to create new opportunities for both tourism and trade between the two countries.
