Malawi has enacted the 2025 Tourism Act, marking a significant overhaul of its tourism legislation for the first time since 1968. Announced by Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule at the UN Tourism Africa and Americas Summit in Zambia, the new law establishes the Malawi Tourism Authority and the Malawi College of Tourism, setting the groundwork for a more modern, structured, and skills-focused industry. The Tourism Authority will lead product development and destination marketing, allowing the Ministry to concentrate on policy and strategy.

The creation of the Malawi College of Tourism, upgrading the existing institute, aims to build local capacity by enhancing professional training within the sector. The reform aligns with President Lazarus Chakwera’s broader agenda to position tourism as a key driver of national transformation. By replacing its outdated legal framework, Malawi is now better placed to attract investment, strengthen its appeal as a destination, and unlock the full potential of its natural and cultural assets.
