The Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) has unveiled plans to comprehensively upgrade Mfuwe International Airport (MFU), a crucial gateway to South Luangwa National Park and the Luangwa Valley's wildlife attractions. Starting on 13 June 2024, this significant development project will encompass several key infrastructure improvements over a 90-day period.

The project will include vital pavement works for the runway, taxiway, and apron to ensure safety and efficiency. The obsolete airfield ground lighting system will be replaced with modern technology, enhancing operational reliability. The reconstruction of the inner perimeter fence will bolster security, and the terminal building will be extended to accommodate increasing passenger traffic.

Originally, ZACL planned to close the airport during the rehabilitation. However, in a directive to minimise disruption, the Zambian Government has mandated that the airport remain operational throughout the upgrade. Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali emphasised the importance of keeping Mfuwe International Airport open to avoid significant disruptions during the peak tourism season.

This upgrade is poised to significantly enhance the infrastructure of Mfuwe International Airport, ensuring it continues to effectively serve the needs of the tourism industry and support the growth of Zambia’s tourism sector.
