Madagascar Secures Major Cruise Line Commitments for 2026-2027 Season
Madagascar has secured significant cruise industry interest following meetings between Malagasy Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Lily Rafaralahy and representatives from major international cruise lines during a mission to France in mid-May. Luxury cruise operator Ponant has announced a programme of 36 to 40 port calls in Madagascar between November 2026 and March 2027, covering several coastal areas with vessels carrying between 150 and 200 passengers per voyage. MSC Cruises, the world's third-largest cruise line, has also committed to five port calls during the same period, with ships carrying between 3,000 and 7,000 passengers each.
MSC Cruises has highlighted the need to modernise port infrastructure at Toliara and Taolagnaro to meet international standards for large cruise vessels, and has expressed interest in contributing to upgrades through a public - private partnership. Beyond infrastructure, discussions have included measures to maximise local economic benefits, including the installation of craft markets and ATMs in cruise terminal areas to promote Malagasy handicrafts and facilitate visitor spending. The commitments signal growing international cruise industry confidence in Madagascar as a destination, with the expanded port call programme expected to provide a meaningful boost to coastal tourism communities.
