Madagascar Airlines strengthens domestic connectivity
Madagascar Airlines has extended lease agreements with lessor Abelo for two ATR turboprops to stabilise its domestic network. The ATR 72-500 (5R-MJF, MSN 698) is now leased until January 2028 and the ATR 72-600 (5R-EJB, MSN 1248) until November 2029, supporting reliable links across the island’s remote regions and signalling continued confidence in the carrier’s Phénix turnaround plan.
Retaining the aircraft maintains operational continuity without major capital outlay, with the ATRs’ short‑runway performance and lower fuel burn well suited to Madagascar’s rugged terrain and dispersed airport network. The move underpins efforts to restore dependable intra‑island services, supporting tourism and trade while advancing the longer‑term Phénix 2030 strategy.
