Lufthansa is set to enhance its South African operations with the introduction of new flight routes connecting Johannesburg and Cape Town to Munich. From 3 September, the German carrier will operate thrice-weekly, year-round flights between Johannesburg and Munich using an Airbus A350-900. This marks the return of a route Lufthansa last served in 2005.

Additionally, seasonal flights between Cape Town and Munich will commence in November, operating during the European winter months. These new services complement Lufthansa's existing Johannesburg-Frankfurt route, offering travellers more options for direct flights to Germany.

The expansion was initially planned for June 2024 but was postponed to accommodate other new routes. It reflects Lufthansa Group's strong presence in Southern Africa, with several subsidiaries serving key destinations in the region.

Munich, a major German city known for its economic significance and tourist attractions, will now be more accessible to South African travellers. This development also comes as South African Airways plans to expand its own international routes, having recently relaunched flights to São Paulo and Perth.
