Mozambique’s national carrier, Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), has suspended its Maputo–Lisbon route, citing accumulated losses of over $21 million since its relaunch in November 2023. The decision is part of an ongoing restructuring effort led by Fly Modern Ark (FMA), which has been overseeing LAM’s management since April 2023. The Maputo–Harare and Maputo–Lusaka routes have also been discontinued due to financial unsustainability. Passengers with existing bookings will be accommodated on partner airlines.

This development comes as LAM undergoes significant operational restructuring following years of financial difficulties and fleet challenges. The Mozambican government recently approved the sale of 91% of its stake in LAM to state-owned companies, with an estimated $130 million raised earmarked for the purchase of eight aircraft and broader company revitalisation. The airline has faced corruption investigations and leadership changes, with Marcelino Gildo Alberto recently appointed as its third chairman in under a year.
