Kruger National Park to remove Kanniedood and Sirheni dams – road closures 8–21 March
Kruger National Park, in conjunction with the South African National Defence Force, is demolishing the Kanniedood and Sirheni dams from 9 to 20 March 2026 to restore river systems by removing man‑made infrastructure. For safety, roads S50 (Shingwedzi, between the S134 and S143 junctions) and S57 (Sirheni road – from Shisha crossing to the junction with the Sirheni bush camp detour) are closed from 8 to 21 March, affecting visitor access in the area.
Ranger and SANDF teams are on standby for wildfire response and ground clearance, with aerial surveillance before each detonation, and military medics on site. The operation will use explosives followed by rubble clearance to remove remaining concrete structures left by the 2013 floods and earlier partial demolitions.
