Kenya targets KSh 258bn strategic partner to revive Kenya Airways

Kenya plans to invite international expressions of interest for a foreign strategic investor to inject between KSh 154.8bn and KSh 258bn (US$1.2bn – US$2bn) into Kenya Airways, aiming to stabilise the flag carrier and reduce reliance on public funding. As part of the restructuring, the State has assumed KSh 63.1bn of KQ’s debt, to be converted into equity once an investor is secured.

The partner could acquire up to a 49 per cent stake under foreign ownership limits and is expected to bring capital, global aviation expertise and operational efficiencies to strengthen competitiveness. Kenya Airways reported liabilities of KSh 309.9bn against assets of KSh 180.3bn as of June 2025 and is seeking at least KSh 64.5bn for fleet expansion and modernisation – a move seen as crucial for the country’s connectivity and wider tourism economy.
