Kenya targets Africa’s first dedicated SAF refinery

Kenya Airways and Rubis Energy Kenya are supporting plans for what could become Africa’s first dedicated sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) refinery. The proposed facility, to be located near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, is expected to produce up to 32,000 tonnes of SAF annually and strengthen Kenya’s ambitions to become a regional green aviation hub.

The development comes as global airlines face mounting pressure to decarbonise operations and increase SAF adoption. For East African tourism and aviation stakeholders, the project signals long-term potential for more sustainable regional connectivity and lower-emission travel.
