Kenya’s Kisumu County Receives AfDB Grant for Lakefront Redevelopment

Kisumu County has secured a KSh97.5 million ($750,000) grant from the African Development Bank through its Urban and Municipal Development Fund to support a major feasibility study for transforming the city’s Lake Victoria waterfront. The project aims to create a climate-resilient, inclusive urban space and marks a key step in the county’s broader strategy to position Kisumu as a model for sustainable waterfront development.

The study will assess the technical, financial, and environmental viability of projects including a 46-kilometre promenade, public parks, beaches, and maritime infrastructure. These developments, led by the Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation, aim to boost tourism, enhance public access, and attract long-term investment. The feasibility work will be aligned with national planning frameworks, with officials optimistic it will unlock further funding for climate-smart urban renewal in the region.
