Kenya plans to develop untapped western tourism circuit
The Kenyan Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has announced an ambitious initiative to develop and promote the western tourism circuit, encompassing over 14 counties. Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa revealed that the plan aims to tap into the region's largely unexplored potential by enhancing infrastructure and marketing efforts.
The ministry has adopted a collaborative approach, working with county governments and various agencies to map out attraction sites and develop necessary infrastructure. Key focus areas include improving accessibility to sites and attracting private investment in hotels and facilities.
Highlights of the plan include aggressively marketing Lake Victoria, water sports, islands, historical sites, and the region's cultural diversity. There are also proposals to connect the western circuit with popular destinations like Maasai Mara through improved road networks.
Ololtuaa expressed optimism about reaching the goal of five million annual tourists by 2027, noting positive trends in recent visitor numbers. The initiative also emphasises the role of county governments in promoting local attractions and boosting domestic tourism.
The announcement comes as Kisumu prepares to host the UN World Tourism Day celebrations, showcasing the region's growing prominence in Kenya's tourism landscape.
