Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, announced that 20 to 25 rhinos will receive unique ear notches and tracking devices, improving their monitoring across challenging terrain. The initiative focuses on protecting Kenya's growing rhino population, which now stands at 1,977, including 1,004 black rhinos and 971 southern white rhinos.

Tsavo West National Park is home to 178 black rhinos with 143 in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, will use LoRAWAN-enabled tracking devices for real-time monitoring of rhino movements. Kenya Wildlife Service Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga said the programme aligns with national rhino conservation plans for 2021-2026.

The ear-notching system provides each rhino with a unique identifier to monitor their health and behaviour, while transmitters collect movement data for informed conservation decisions.

The initiative reinforces Kenya's commitment to global biodiversity goals while supporting sustainable livelihoods for communities living alongside wildlife.
