Kenya issues new FAQ guidance on mandatory visitor health insurance

The Kenyan Tourist Board has published a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document providing further details on the country's proposed Inbound Travel Health Insurance Cover for international visitors. The guidance addresses a number of important questions raised by the travel industry, including who is required to purchase the insurance, exemptions, costs, coverage, claims procedures and how the scheme will operate.

The document states visitors will be required to purchase the Kenyan insurance policy even if they already hold comprehensive travel insurance from their home country. The scheme provides benefits of up to USD 50,000 per person, including medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. Policies are to be purchased for USD$44 through the official eTA/eCitizen process or upon arrival by scanning a designated QR code and will be valid for one year.

Exemptions include Kenyan residents, citizens of East African Community partner states and children under three. The guidance also contains a dedicated section for tour operators, hotels, airlines and travel agents, outlining what businesses should communicate to clients before departure.
