Kenya Eyes Growth in Cruise Tourism as Mombasa Welcomes Crystal Symphony
Kenya’s tourism sector is accelerating its diversification strategy with a renewed focus on cruise tourism, highlighted by the recent docking of the Crystal Symphony in Mombasa carrying 600 passengers. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) views cruise tourism as a growth driver that can generate revenue, support local jobs, and elevate the country’s global tourism profile. The new cruise terminal in Mombasa, featuring modern amenities, strengthens Kenya’s appeal alongside other key Indian Ocean cruise destinations.
Cruise arrivals, though currently a small proportion of total visitor numbers, represent a strategic opportunity for sustained tourism growth. Kenya welcomed 2.5 million tourists in 2024 — a 31.6% year-on-year increase — with the government targeting 7 million by 2027. KTB’s Cruise Tourism Strategy includes global outreach, partnerships with cruise operators, and participation in events such as Seatrade Cruise Global. With its wildlife, beaches, and cultural richness, Kenya offers strong appeal for cruise travellers — presenting African travel agents with valuable opportunities to develop tailored, land-based experiences and excursions that complement cruise itineraries.
