The City of Johannesburg has launched its new Tourism Ambassador Programme, deploying 227 trained ambassadors across key tourism hotspots. The initiative aims to enhance visitor safety, provide seamless information services, and improve the overall tourism experience. Following months of preparation, including a rigorous training programme led by the city's Department of Public Safety, the ambassadors have been stationed at major attractions to offer first aid, fire prevention, and service excellence. This effort underscores the city’s commitment to establishing itself as a leading urban tourism destination.

In addition to improving visitor experiences, the programme serves as a youth employment initiative, creating jobs and upskilling unemployed young people. Joburg Tourism CEO Thandubuhle Mgudlwa highlighted its success in helping previous participants secure full-time roles within the tourism sector. By addressing challenges such as safety, navigation, and accessibility, the programme enhances Johannesburg’s tourism appeal while contributing to long-term workforce development. Its collaborative approach between public and private sectors sets a benchmark for urban tourism initiatives globally, positioning Johannesburg as an increasingly attractive destination for international travellers.
