His Majesty the Litunga appointed to Peace Parks Foundation Board
Peace Parks Foundation has appointed His Majesty the Litunga, Lubosi Imwiko II of Zambia's Western Province, to its Board of Directors. As custodian of the Barotse Floodplain and surrounding landscapes, His Majesty brings traditional leadership into one of southern Africa's most significant cultural and ecological regions, and has been instrumental in advancing the Kafue-Zambezi Community Forest Project, which links forest protection to sustainable community livelihoods through carbon offsets.
The appointment signals a deliberate move by the Foundation to embed traditional authority into conservation decision-making at the highest level. "Conservation at scale endures when it is built together with the people who carry responsibility for these landscapes," said Werner Myburgh, CEO of Peace Parks Foundation. Founded in 1997 by Nelson Mandela, HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, and Dr Anton Rupert, Peace Parks Foundation currently helps protect more than 780,000 km² across southern Africa and supports over 400,000 people through its programmes, with a Vision 2050 target of securing 18 fully functional transboundary landscapes spanning 980,000 km².
