Henry Mussa Appointed Executive Director of Malawi Institute of Tourism
Henry Mussa has been appointed Executive Director of the Malawi Institute of Tourism (MIT), the country's principal public training institution for hospitality, tourism and travel management. The appointment, confirmed in a staff circular signed by acting executive director Kamwana Karim, was approved by the MIT Board of Trustees and takes effect from 7 July 2026.
Mussa, a former senior figure in Malawi's Democratic Progressive Party who previously served a prison sentence for abuse of office, returns to public life in an administrative capacity as the government places renewed focus on tourism as a driver of economic growth - a sector policymakers have repeatedly identified as underexploited relative to its potential. His appointment has drawn attention given his political history, with observers noting the role represents a return to public office rather than a restoration of political influence.
