2025 Impact Report reveals landmark year for education, community upliftment, and environmental conservation
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA / LIKOMA ISLAND, MALAWI — Green Safaris Conservation Foundation (GSCF) has released its 2025 Impact Report, highlighting a year of significant progress across conservation, education, and community development in sub-Saharan Africa. Through the collective efforts of its partners, lodge properties, and local communities, GSCF mobilised $410,000 to drive meaningful, measurable impact across Zambia and Malawi.
From planting tens of thousands of saplings on Likoma Island to funding secondary school fees for 60 students, this year's results reflect GSCF's commitment to conservation-led tourism that gives back as much as it takes in.
Education: Building the Next Generation of Conservationists
GSCF's education programmes reached an unprecedented scale in 2025, touching students from nursery level through university across Zambia and Malawi:
- 60 students received financial assistance with secondary school fees
- 12 students were supported through college and university degrees
- 71 schools reached through environmental education programmes
- 280+ students engaged in Kafue Conservation Education Clubs, with immersive field learning in national parks
- 6 nursery schools on Likoma Island received dedicated funding
- 2,500+ conservation curriculum booklets distributed
- $3,000 worth of learning materials donated to Chima, Nkhwazi, and St Peter's Primary Schools
- 20 students completed a computer literacy class
- A new ablution block was installed for 24 pupils at Mukuni Primary School
Community Upliftment: From the Ground Up
GSCF continued to prioritise economic empowerment and food security within the communities surrounding its lodge properties:
- The 12.6-hectare organic community farm was formally handed over to the Mukuni Development Trust
- A 6-hectare Mulendema Organic Community Farm is now fully operational
- 4 women are receiving work and small-scale farming training at the Hope Community Garden
- 9 community gardens are fully productive and income-generating
- 360 beehives established, supporting diversified livelihoods
- 180 households equipped with fuel-efficient stoves
- Market linkages created to supply lodges with locally grown produce (farm-to-table)
Our Ecosystems: Planting Roots for the Future
Environmental restoration remained central to GSCF's operations in 2025, with results spanning water security, reforestation, and human-wildlife coexistence:
- 5 check dams constructed to strengthen water security and groundwater recharge
- 22,000 saplings dispersed across Likoma Island
- 500 trees planted in the Mukuni Chiefdom
- 2,335 bamboos planted in the Mulendema Chiefdom
- Extended growing seasons enabled through intervention, supporting year-round agriculture
- Non-lethal human-wildlife mitigation systems deployed, including beehives, chilli fencing, and protective barriers
- 99% community-led implementation across all ecosystem projects
Our Properties: Leading by Example
Green Safaris' lodge properties continued to set the benchmark for sustainable luxury tourism in Africa:
- 80% of the Green Safaris Group now runs on solar power
- 0% single-use plastics, saving 1kg of plastic waste per bednight
- 850,000 litres of water saved per year
- 100,000 trees planted to date by Green Safaris
- 14 hectares of 100% organic farm-to-table production
- 5 solar-powered e-cruisers operating in Zambian national parks
- 14 e-bikes making cycling solar-powered across Zambia and Malawi
- 2 e-boats and 3 e-dhows running on solar power on the Kafue and Zambezi Rivers and at Likoma
- Management team is 60% women-led
- 29,200 litres of diesel saved per annum
Healthcare, Environmental Stewardship & Conservation
In Malawi, GSCF extended its support to frontline healthcare and environmental action:
- 60 mother-baby care kits distributed
- 6 nursery schools supported with feeding programmes
- Local healthcare capacity strengthened through clinical partnerships
- 22,000 tree seedlings grown
- 12,300 plastic bottles collected through the Clean Up Likoma initiative
- 1,230 children engaged in environmental action
Through its conservation partner network, GSCF also supported 201 anti-poaching operations, resulting in 27 arrests and recovery of 23 firearms, with 24,000+ vehicles screened. Long-term carnivore research into lions, wild dogs, and cheetahs continued in partnership with the Zambian Carnivore Programme and allied organisations.
