Great Zimbabwe Hotel Doubles Room Capacity in Multi-Million Dollar Expansion

The Great Zimbabwe Hotel in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, has begun a multi-million dollar expansion project that will add 71 new rooms - comprising two presidential suites, 20 executive rooms, and 59 standard rooms - alongside a 500-seat conference centre, with both phases targeted for completion by 1 September. The development is timed to coincide with the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo, scheduled for 9 to 12 September in Masvingo. The hotel, situated approximately 700 metres from the UNESCO-designated Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site, has also changed hands, moving from Africa Sun Limited to Kefmeg Investments under the Mewame Family Trust, making it a wholly indigenous Zimbabwean-owned property.

General Manager Areths Takaza confirmed that construction is already underway with approval from the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ), noting that UNESCO guidelines will govern key aspects of the build, including materials, paint colours, and structural scale, to protect the integrity of the adjacent heritage site. The expansion responds to surging demand driven by rising international arrivals, increased business activity, and a growing domestic tourism market. The Great Zimbabwe Monument - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 - continues to draw increasing visitor numbers, further bolstered by an ongoing multi-million dollar preservation project at the site itself.
