Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Calls for Partners to Address Elephant Overpopulation Crisis
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has issued an urgent appeal for conservation partners to help identify safe havens for elephant translocation, warning that overpopulation across KwaZulu-Natal's protected areas is placing critical strain on biodiversity, animal welfare, and reserve management. As of 31 March 2026, an estimated 2,862 elephants are recorded across 22 properties in the province, with 2,089 within Ezemvelo-managed reserves including Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Tembe Elephant Park, Ithala Game Reserve, and uMkhuze Game Reserve - all carrying populations above estimated capacity despite existing contraception programmes and efforts to expand protected areas.
The organisation has cautioned that culling, while not yet decided upon, could become necessary in the near future if ecological pressures continue to escalate and non-lethal solutions cannot be secured. KwaZulu-Natal's fenced and relatively compact reserves differ fundamentally from larger systems such as Kruger National Park, requiring active population management rather than reliance on natural processes. Ezemvelo has warned that unchecked growth carries compounding risks including human-wildlife conflict, fence breaches, disease transmission, and ecological collapse - particularly during drought conditions - underscoring the urgency of securing translocation destinations as a priority conservation intervention.
