Ethiopian Airlines targets 2028 Australia debut
Ethiopian Airlines plans to launch flights to Australia in 2028, subject to securing at least two additional long‑range widebodies, Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said at a press conference in Addis Ababa on 10 February. He cautioned that the timeline depends on aircraft deliveries or leases; the move would make Ethiopian the only African carrier serving all inhabited continents.
The airline has outstanding orders for A350‑900s, B787‑9s and B777‑9s, with the required widebodies not expected before 2028, according to Tasew. He added that two Australian cities have been shortlisted, with a final decision to follow once aircraft are in place. Ethiopian currently serves 172 destinations across five continents, supported by a long‑haul fleet of A350s, B777s and B787s, according to ch‑aviation.
