Ethiopia’s Ministry of Tourism and UNESCO have launched a new regional initiative to promote geotourism and sustainable development across Eastern Africa. The joint effort was marked by a high-level workshop held in Addis Ababa under the theme “The Role of UNESCO Global Geoparks and Geotourism for Sustainable Development.” The event brought together government officials, regional experts, and UNESCO representatives to explore how geological heritage can support inclusive economic growth and environmental stewardship.

Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa emphasised Ethiopia’s unique geoheritage – from the Simien Mountains to the Dallol Depression – and its potential for UNESCO Global Geopark recognition. With 12 World Heritage Sites and five biosphere reserves, Ethiopia is positioning itself to lead geotourism development in the region. UNESCO officials highlighted that Eastern Africa, with its rich geological assets, remains underrepresented in the Global Geoparks Network, which currently includes just two sites in Africa. The initiative aims to not only boost sustainable tourism but also create jobs and strengthen local economies through the protection and promotion of geoheritage.
