Ethiopia Launches First Locally Made E-Passport with Advanced Security Features

Ethiopia has introduced its first locally produced electronic passport (E-passport), officially launched on 21 February at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa. Developed in partnership with Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS), Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), and TOPPAN Security Ethiopia S.C., the E-passport incorporates biometric technology, advanced encryption, and tamper-proof materials to enhance security and streamline travel processes. The initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s broader efforts to modernise immigration services and reduce reliance on foreign document production.
Alongside the E-passport, ICS has rolled out digital transformation measures to improve visa, ID, and permit issuance, reducing processing times and strengthening protections against fraud. The transition from the Machine-Readable Passport (MRP) was showcased during the launch event, highlighting Ethiopia’s commitment to modernising its border control systems. A nationwide awareness campaign will assist citizens in adopting the new passport, which is expected to contribute to a more seamless and secure travel experience.
