Ethiopia has officially launched its Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), a global measurement tool developed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. This initiative aims to provide a standardised framework for assessing tourism's economic impact in the country.

Tourism Minister Nasisie Chali hailed the launch as a historic milestone, emphasising its importance in capturing comprehensive data about the tourism sector. The TSA is expected to enable more effective measurement and management of tourism's economic contributions to Ethiopia.

The country joins a select group of African nations, including Kenya and Uganda, in implementing this system. The project is being carried out in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and various domestic institutions.

UNECA Representative Geoffrey Manyara commended Ethiopia's commitment to data-driven tourism development, noting that the country's preparedness for the TSA began in February last year. He highlighted that Ethiopia is now among the few African countries with an approved TSA.

The initiative is anticipated to provide valuable insights into tourism's true contribution to the Ethiopian economy and its future potential, supporting sustainable development in this key sector.
