Ethiopia Deploys AI and Digital Technology to Drive Tourism Growth

Ethiopia is advancing the digital transformation of its tourism sector through policy reform, strategic partnerships and technology-driven initiatives, Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa announced at the launch of the 6th Oromia Tourism Week in Addis Ababa on 30 September. A new national tourism policy, which came into effect this year, identifies AI and digital technology as central to reshaping how destinations are marketed, trips are planned, heritage sites are interpreted and visitor experiences are delivered. The government has also established a Smart Tourism Information Centre at the Ministry of Tourism's headquarters, and a forthcoming AI University is expected to build broader artificial intelligence capacity across Ethiopia and the continent.

Minister Selamawit emphasised that digital transformation must remain inclusive and human-centred, ensuring tourism benefits are not concentrated in a limited number of destinations or platforms. Oromia Tourism Commissioner Lelise Duga noted that the annual Tourism Week is growing into a significant platform for connecting domestic and international stakeholders, with representatives from more than 20 countries participating this year. The three-day event features panel discussions on digital tourism, AI and inclusive tourism, bringing together tour operators, tourism professionals and private-sector actors to explore investment and development opportunities across Ethiopia's tourism landscape.
