Eight Cape Town beaches earn Blue Flag status
A total of eight Cape Town beaches have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag status for the 2024/25 season, reinforcing the city's reputation as a world-class coastal destination. The announcement was made by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) at a national ceremony on October 28.
The accredited beaches include popular destinations Clifton 4th, Camps Bay, Muizenberg, and Fish Hoek, along with Silwerstroomstrand, Llandudno, Bikini Beach, and Melkbosstrand. The Blue Flag season will run from December 1, 2024, through January 31, 2025.
WESSA CEO Cindy-Lee Cloete emphasised the recognition's significance in promoting responsible tourism and community involvement in environmental conservation. The status requires beaches to meet strict criteria, including regular water quality testing, pristine coastal conditions, and well-maintained facilities.
Councillor Patricia van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, expressed pride in the achievement, highlighting the city's dedication to maintaining safe, clean, and accessible coastal spaces. The recognition reflects Cape Town's ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and responsible coastal management, ensuring visitors can enjoy enhanced safety measures and quality facilities throughout the summer season.
