Eight big projects to boost cultural tourism in Rwanda
Nyanza, Rwanda's oldest town and cultural hub, is set for a significant transformation with eight multi-billion-franc projects aimed at boosting development and cultural tourism.
The ambitious plans include a Rwf4.5 billion Cultural Village, featuring infrastructure showcasing Rwandan culture, theatres, and accommodation for tourists. The King's Palace will undergo a Rwf2 billion expansion, enhancing its role as a museum of Rwanda's monarchical history.
A 20,000-seat Olympic stadium, estimated at Rwf145 billion, will be constructed, potentially becoming home to Rayon Sports Football Club. Traditional sports will be reintroduced to bolster cultural offerings.
Other projects include a new bus park (Rwf3 billion), a modern market (Rwf3.4 billion), and improved accommodation facilities for tourists. Additionally, Rwanda's first ceramic tiles manufacturing plant, a $29 million investment, will be established in Nyanza.
These developments aim to capitalise on Nyanza's rich cultural heritage, including its royal history and the famous long-horned Inyambo cows. Currently attracting over 70,000 visitors annually, these projects are expected to significantly boost tourism and economic growth in the region.
