Early Elephant Migration into Zambia Prompts Advisory for Visitors

A herd of over 150 elephants, including newborn calves, has crossed into Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park from Zimbabwe, prompting wildlife officials to issue a caution to residents and tourists. The presence of week-old calves has made the herd more protective, increasing the risk of defensive behaviour near humans. Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife confirmed the early arrival, which typically occurs later in the dry season.

Officials have urged motorists to be particularly careful along the road between the Radisson Blu Hotel and the Dry Manzi picnic area, a known wildlife corridor. Conservationists are monitoring the migration closely and have stressed the importance of maintaining safe distances to support coexistence. The shift in migration timing may indicate broader environmental changes and has renewed attention on protecting key migration routes within the UNESCO-listed park near Victoria Falls.
