Documentary 'RHINO' Premieres in Nairobi, Spotlighting Kenya's Black Rhino Recovery
A documentary chronicling Kenya's black rhino conservation efforts has held its African premiere in Nairobi, following an earlier screening in London. Directed by Tom Martienssen and narrated by actor Tom Hardy, RHINO follows Kenyan rangers and conservation teams over five years, with a central focus on the 2024 translocation of 21 black rhinos to Loisaba Conservancy - restoring the species to an area where it had been absent for decades. The Nairobi screening brought together conservationists, rangers, veterinary experts and diplomats, and was followed by a panel discussion on the evolving challenges of rhino protection.
The film arrives as Kenya's black rhino population reaches a notable milestone. Kenya Wildlife Service Director General Professor Erustus Kanga confirmed the population stood at 1,147 by the end of 2025, with conservation priorities increasingly focused on securing additional habitat for a growing population. At Loisaba, the 21 relocated rhinos have since produced nine calves, bringing the conservancy's population to 30. Beyond the wildlife story, the documentary places the rangers, communities and partnerships at the centre of the narrative - underlining the human effort behind one of Africa's most significant conservation recoveries.
