Direct Flights Resume Between UK and Sierra Leone After 12-Year Gap

Direct air connectivity between the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone has been re-established after a 12-year hiatus, following the successful inaugural flight operated by British carrier Ascend Airways on behalf of Air Sierra Leone. The first London Gatwick–Freetown service departed on 26 April and returned the following day, coinciding with Sierra Leone’s Independence Day celebrations. The reinstated route carried UK-based Sierra Leonean diaspora and international travellers, marking a significant milestone for both nations.

Commencing 16 June, Ascend Airways will operate three weekly services on the route, supported by its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The airline—the UK subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group—will oversee flight operations, safety, and maintenance. Positioned to boost tourism and business travel, the new air link is expected to support stronger economic and cultural ties between Sierra Leone and the UK.
