Dar es Salaam is set to transform into a round-the-clock business hub, with plans to launch 24-hour operations across key sectors of the city. The initiative, announced by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila, aims to formalise the informal sector, create opportunities for unemployed youth, and boost economic activity. Speaking at the Taxpayers’ Appreciation Awards on 24 January 2025, Chalamila highlighted that preparations are underway, including the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations like Kariakoo to enhance security.

This landmark development is anticipated to benefit both residents and visitors by increasing access to goods and services at all hours. The move aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of modernising urban centres, starting with extended business operations at the soon-to-be-completed Kariakoo Market. Once implemented, the 24-hour initiative is expected to revitalise Dar es Salaam as a vibrant commercial hub, attract regional investors, and position the city as a key destination for business, tourism, and economic growth in East Africa.
