Conakry Airport Eyes Air Algerie and EgyptAir Routes as Passenger Numbers Surge 22%

Conakry Ahmed Sekou Toure International Airport in Guinea is in discussions with Air Algerie and EgyptAir to add new services, as the airport recorded 545,330 passengers in the first half of 2026 - a 22.2% increase on the same period a year earlier. Air Algerie plans to launch a three-times-weekly service between Algiers and Conakry, while EgyptAir talks could result in a route beginning in the summer 2027 season, according to SOGEAG managing director Saïd Oumar Koulibaly. The airport is on course to exceed one million annual passengers for the first time in 2026, having already recorded 957,820 passengers across the full year of 2025.

The rapid traffic growth has placed significant pressure on the existing terminal, which was originally designed to handle approximately 500,000 passengers per year. A new 32,000 m² terminal is planned to raise annual capacity to three million passengers, alongside a new control tower, additional taxiways and runway improvements, with financing for the second construction phase covered under a memorandum of understanding signed between the Guinean government and Turkish partner Albayrak in December 2025. In the near term, SOGEAG is focusing on increasing frequencies and capacity among existing carriers - including Air France, Ethiopian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Royal Air Maroc - rather than onboarding multiple new airlines while construction is under way. A new cargo terminal with annual processing capacity of 20,000 metric tons became operational approximately four months ago.
