Chobe issues critical road advisory after heavy rains
Botswana’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism, through the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, has issued an urgent advisory on hazardous road conditions in and around Chobe National Park following recent heavy rains. Self‑drive visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution, with the worst impacts reported in the Mababe, Savuti, Ghoha and Linyanti areas.
Key updates include: Mababe–Savuti Marsh Road closed; Sand Ridge Road open but with deep standing water; Savuti–Ghoha Airstrip Route waterlogged and Direct Route affected, with the narrower Pimple Hill Route recommended under caution; Ghoha–Linyanti Park Boundary Road closed – use the Savuti–Linyanti Road instead; and poor conditions on the Maun–Khwai Access Road on exiting Mababe Gate. Travellers are advised to avoid solo travel, carry 24‑hour emergency communication (e.g., satellite phones), and monitor DWNP updates as conditions may change rapidly during the rainy season.
