Cape Town has unveiled plans to transform Lupin Park, opposite the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu's family home in Milnerton, into a memorial park honouring the revered anti-apartheid activist. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced the proposal on Tuesday, alongside Leah Tutu and Dr Ramphele Mamphele, chairperson of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu IP Trust.

The ambitious project, subject to public approval, could commence by mid-2025. Plans include a children's play area, open-air amphitheatre, and memorial garden. "We're going to make a beautiful memorial park here," Hill-Lewis enthused.

Leah Tutu shared a touching anecdote about her helper, Nancy, who once single-handedly cleaned the park, echoing the Archbishop's own commitment to community care.

The mayor expressed hope that the revamped space would serve as a lasting tribute to Tutu family values, preserving the legacy of one of South Africa's most beloved figures for future generations.
