Cape Town expects record tourism numbers this festive season
Cape Town is preparing for what is predicted to be a record-breaking tourism season, building on strong growth that saw international visitor numbers rise 18% in December 2023 and 13% in early 2024.
The city, recently named Africa's Leading City Destination at the World Travel Awards for the fourth consecutive year, remains an attractive option for international visitors due to its affordability compared to destinations like London and New York.
Key trends shaping the summer season include growth in short-term rentals, with Cape Town's Airbnb market outperforming other major cities, and increased experiential tourism through new attractions like the Durbanville Wine Safari and Uber Safari service.
Cruise tourism continues to be a significant contributor, having generated R1.32 billion for the local economy during the 2023/24 season and creating nearly 2,000 jobs. Wesley Cowan, Managing Director of Galetti Auction, suggests the upcoming season could drive growth in both residential and commercial property markets.
The city's well-maintained infrastructure remains a key attraction for tourists and businesses despite other urban challenges.
