Cape Town-Antarctic Flights Take Off With Sustainable Fuel
Antarctic tourists flying from Cape Town will soon be able to travel on flights powered partly by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from used cooking oil. South African energy company Sasol is supplying the fuel to luxury Antarctic operator White Desert, which offers high-end expeditions to the continent.
The initiative comes as Antarctic tourism grows and operators face increasing pressure to reduce the environmental impact of travel to the remote region. White Desert's trips can cost up to US$120,000, highlighting the premium market being targeted while demonstrating how SAF could be incorporated into specialised tourism operations.
