Broll Property Group wins contract to restore deteriorating Robben Island

Broll Property Group, a leading commercial property services company, has secured the contract to manage Robben Island, the UNESCO World Heritage Site at risk of losing its status due to severe disrepair. The island, famous for its role in South Africa's struggle against apartheid, has faced significant maintenance challenges in recent years.
Malcolm Horne, CEO at Broll, outlined the company’s comprehensive restoration plan, “We'll implement IoT tools for real-time monitoring, introduce water conservation methods, and install energy-efficient systems. Our goal is to address the island's deterioration while preserving its historical integrity.”
Broll's expertise in managing 43 million square metres of space across 13 African countries will be crucial in this endeavour. The company plans to conduct thorough structural assessments, repair damaged facilities, and implement a rigorous maintenance schedule to prevent future decay.
Mantsi Moiloa, Public Sector Group Head, added, “Beyond physical restoration, we're committed to revitalising Robben Island's cultural significance through new educational programmes and community events.”
The project, which commenced on 24 May 2024, aims to secure Robben Island's future as both a preserved historical site and a sustainable tourist destination.
