Bolt Launches in Zanzibar Following Ride-Hailing Policy Reform

Zanzibar has officially granted Bolt a licence to operate across the islands, marking the region’s first major ride-hailing deployment and a key shift in transport policy. The announcement, confirmed on 6 August 2025, introduces app-based mobility options to support rising demand for safe, efficient, and tech-enabled transport—particularly during peak tourism periods, as visitor numbers continue to climb.

The move is part of broader efforts by Zanzibar’s authorities to modernise urban transport and support tourism-linked economic growth. Bolt's entry is expected to ease congestion, create new income streams for local drivers, and improve service delivery. According to the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, the islands registered over 106,000 international arrivals in July alone—a record monthly high. With nearly half a million tourists welcomed since January, the rollout of digital transport solutions is seen as critical to sustaining mobility and enhancing the visitor experience.
