Aviation Expansion at Big Water Aero Set to Boost Tourism in South Africa's Free State
The repositioning of Big Water Aero, formerly Gariep Airport, as a regional aviation and adventure hub is expected to broaden tourism appeal across three towns in the southern Free State - Gariep, Philippolis and Bethulie. Now owned by aviation group rsa.Aero, the fully operational airfield has an established reputation among gliding enthusiasts, with plans to expand into microlight flights and hot-air ballooning. The development is being pursued incrementally, with the precinct's proximity to the Gariep Dam and favourable thermal flying conditions providing a strong foundation for growth.
According to Wayne Rubidge, area principal for Pam Golding Properties Karoo, increased visitor activity generated by the expansion is expected to bring greater exposure to all three towns, each offering a distinct leisure and residential proposition. Gariep's aviation and water-sport facilities, Philippolis's historic Karoo character and Bethulie's natural reserves and water-based recreation collectively present a compelling offering for tourism operators and property buyers alike. The broader region already supports around 14 guesthouses and six guest farms in the Bethulie district alone, with the Big Water Aero development seen as a catalyst for further growth in accommodation demand and inbound visitor numbers.
