The 38th African Union (AU) Summit has intensified calls for visa-free travel across Africa, highlighting its importance for economic integration and trade. The African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) stressed that restrictive visa policies continue to obstruct intra-African commerce, labour mobility, and investment. While nations like Rwanda, The Gambia, Seychelles, Benin, and Ghana have embraced visa-free policies, over half of African countries still require visas for most travellers within the continent.

To accelerate change, the AU and AfDB have launched the 2025 Visa-Free Roadshow, a campaign aimed at engaging policymakers and businesses to promote visa liberalisation. Officials emphasised that seamless movement of people is key to maximising the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and realising the AU’s Agenda 2063 vision of a borderless Africa. As discussions continue, leaders are being urged to translate commitments into action to boost tourism, trade, and economic growth.
