Asilia Africa | Rekero Reimagined

Exciting changes are underway at Rekero in the Masai Mara as the camp prepares to close for this season, and to reappear for the next one with a fresh new look. It’s time to upgrade, update, and breathe new life into one of our oldest and most loved camps. With a redesign of both the tents and main areas, it promises to deliver an even better experience for guests next season, while retaining the heritage charm for which it is renowned.

Rekero has been operating for an impressive 37 years and has been boasting unparalleled views of the great migration for as long. With superb year-round game viewing and an enviable location, it is easy to see why the comfortable camp is so loved by our guests, and why so many of them return year after year. This year the camp closes slightly earlier than usual, with our teams on the ground poised and eager to action the carefully laid out refurbishment plans. While they bid farewell to the last guests ahead of that, we are delighted to reveal what you can expect when Rekero re-opens in a few months’ time.

Main Areas

Rekero’s main areas are perhaps already its standout feature. This upgrade will see these areas almost double in size, with a wraparound deck oriented to maximise the stunning river outlook, offering greater than 180-degree views.

Expect a light and relaxing feel to the interiors, with a fresh new colour palette and plenty of natural elements, seamlessly blending these with the exterior surroundings. The main area design has been angled to fit perfectly into the riverine forest of Rekero and around the existing age-old trees that will provide welcome shade in the heat of the day. All the furniture is being carefully restored and either reused or repurposed along with some new locally made items.

A new library behind the lounge will double as a private dining area, creating a cosy space where Rekero’s history will be told through a collection of photos.

Standard Tents

While the overall layout of the standard tents will remain the same, the décor and ambience will be brighter, with beautiful light mango wood replacing the current dark furniture. That furniture will be repurposed elsewhere, and Rekero’s much-loved traditional safari camp style will be retained. The bathrooms will display the majority of the changes with additional privacy created through dividers and wooden screens. Expect plenty of air and light in an enhanced setting. Sheer linen curtains will break up the canvas of the traditional safari tents and there will be a quirky nod of respect to the old Rekero in the décor.

Family Tents

The two family tents are being completely replaced with a new design that offers more comfort for families and is now also suited to those travelling with older children. The main en suite bedroom will be very similar to the standard tents, joined to the second room by a communal living area. The second room has two single beds that can be made into a double, or even a triple if needed, and, crucially, will also have its own bathroom. Both bathrooms will have a double basin, toilet, and shower with sliding doors to offer more privacy.

The orientation of the family tents will remain as before, with only the main bedroom facing onto the river. It is, therefore, suitable for adults travelling together as well as adults with children, but it is important to note that the bedrooms are not identical. The main bedroom has an extra verandah area but there is the central sitting room for extra comfort and the windows throughout the entire unit will be larger, bringing the beautiful riverine forest into the rooms with a lighter and airier feel.

Rekero will remain in our “Classic” camp tier and the aim is to retain its well-loved character and history, maximise its unique position, and make it a tranquil and comfortable haven for guests.

Rekero will open in June for the new season. Renders and tent layouts can be found on the Info Zone.
