Angola and United States sign Open Skies Agreement

In a significant move to strengthen bilateral relations, the United States and Angola have signed an Open Skies Air Transport Agreement in Luanda. U.S. Ambassador to Angola, Tulinabo S. Mushingi, and Angolan Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Ambassador Domingos Custodio Vieira Lopes, formalised the agreement, which aims to modernise the civil aviation transportation relationship between the two nations.
This agreement enhances economic ties, fosters tourism, and opens new opportunities for airlines and travellers. It allows for unrestricted capacity and frequency of services for both passenger and cargo carriers, along with open route rights and an open charter regime. Additionally, it promotes code-sharing opportunities and self-handling provisions.
Since its initial signing in April 2023, the agreement has been provisionally in place and will officially come into force following the completion of necessary diplomatic procedures. This partnership positions Angola among a select group of countries with similar agreements with the U.S., supporting high standards of aviation safety and security while enabling U.S. air carriers to expand their international operations.
