AirAsia X is set to launch its longest route from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi, marking the airline's first venture onto the African mainland. Starting November 15, the 3,900 nautical mile route will operate four times weekly using a 377-seat Airbus A330-300.

The new service faces several challenges, including distribution issues and lack of brand recognition in Africa. AirAsia X's reliance on direct sales and absence from global distribution systems may hinder ticket sales in the region. The airline also doesn't offer commissions to travel agents, potentially limiting awareness and bookings.

Industry experts express concerns about the route's viability, citing the small point-to-point market and the need for strong connecting traffic through Kuala Lumpur to sustain the service. The airline's pricing model, which separates baggage fees, may also face resistance in the African market.

Despite these challenges, AirAsia X aims to leverage its Kuala Lumpur hub to feed passengers from across Southeast Asia, hoping to make the new long-haul route successful.
