African Parks Assumes Co-Management of Kundelungu National Park in DRC

The Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) and African Parks have signed a long-term co-management agreement for Kundelungu National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The partnership aims to restore the park’s ecosystems while promoting community development and income generation. Located in southeastern DRC, Kundelungu spans 8,165 km² and is recognised for its biodiversity, natural landmarks like Lofoi Falls, and its vital role in watershed protection for the Lufira River basin.

In addition to this agreement, African Parks has renewed its long-standing management mandate for Garamba National Park, extending a collaboration with ICCN that began in 2005. The launch phase at Kundelungu includes team recruitment, training, and environmental assessments to support the implementation of a comprehensive, community-driven management plan. The park’s accessibility from Lubumbashi and proximity to other protected areas offers strong potential for conservation-led tourism and regional ecological connectivity.
