Africa Outpaces Global Decline in Air Passenger Demand in June 2026
Global air passenger demand declined 1.7% in June 2026 compared to the same month last year, driven largely by domestic market contractions in China (-5.2%), the US (-1.2%), and Japan (-3.8%), as well as a sharp 14% drop in Middle East international traffic linked to the ongoing impact of the Iran conflict on regional airline operations. Total capacity fell 1.3% year-on-year, with the global load factor settling at 84.2%, according to IATA data released this week. IATA Director General Willie Walsh noted that while people continue to travel, rising fuel prices and regional instability are placing upward pressure on airfares.
Africa stood out as a strong performer against the global trend, recording 3.8% growth in total passenger demand and a 6.7% increase in international RPKs, with capacity up 7.0% year-on-year. The continent's load factor held at 73.9% - 74.2% on international routes - reflecting continued expansion in seat supply across African carriers. European carriers also posted modest growth of 1.5% in international demand, with the Europe - Asia corridor leading all major route corridors at 11.0% growth. Walsh underscored that stabilising the Middle East situation and normalising oil supplies would materially improve prospects for airlines, economies, and societies globally.
