AfDB launches aviation programme to boost African connectivity
The African Development Bank has launched the Integrated Aviation Transform Programme at the Airlines, Capital and Connectivity Forum in Nairobi, aiming to improve continental air connectivity, enhance safety and build industry skills. Implemented through public–private partnerships, the initiative seeks to expand access to affordable aircraft, support airport upgrades and encourage greener operations – measures expected to lower costs and open new routes that benefit trade and tourism.
Structured around three pillars, the programme will help operationalise the Single African Air Transport Market, strengthen safety oversight and invest in training for pilots, technical staff and airport operations. AfDB officials said improved efficiency and connectivity should stimulate economic growth and regional integration, including support for the AfCFTA, with stakeholders exploring blended finance, green bonds and regional investment pools to accelerate delivery.
